Firebox writer of the year competition winners

  • Sep 09, 2010 from stuartmiles in *
stuartmiles Who shall go to the ball?

In August, Pocket-lint and Firebox ran a competition to see whether the Firebox readers had what it takes to be published on Pocket-lint.
The entries flooded in and now we can announce the winners.
All the entrants had to do was?email?the gadget and gizmo site a 250 word review of a Firebox product of their choice.
The winner, and one runner-up, receive a pair of "golden tickets" to the?quirky gift store's annual Christmas press event, held on Wednesday 15 September in central London. It gives them a chance to play with the hottest toys and gadgets this side of 2011.
    ?
First, though, here's some entries that came very close to winning. Although they don't get a prize, both Pocket-lint and Firebox think they deserve a big "distinction" tag:
    Review of Beer Soap
    by Gary Murphy
The two words beer and soap are rarely seen together. Both real ale and fizzy boy lager slurpers would rather their beer hand was used for alcohol or other nefarious purposes than cleanliness.
But now you can get that authentic eau de brewery sensation while wasting morning time under the shower. People at work will assume you're burning the candle at both ends, but oh no, your Stella flavoured slab will make you feel like you're in the boozer every single day.
So don't waste your dwindling coffers on shower gel, be a real man and get hairs stuck in your beer soap. Feel the solidity of a soap bar and smell the authenticity of your preferred tipple, instead of your girlfriends herbal essences.
And while you're at it why not try out the Guinness, Toon Broon Ale or Kronenbourg? The aromas will make you feel drunk happy without drinking gallons of brown liquid.?
So don't delay, you can even throw a bar into your gym bag, or use it as a paperweight for your FHM collection. Indeed, who could miss out on a chance of owning something functional, beautiful and yet nice tasting (a bit like the missus)?

    MyTunes MP3 Amp
    by Amy Durrant
In todays tech enriched society, it is safe to say that MP3 players have transformed our world into a hub of tunes and Apps. Thankfully, the population can blast their music heavenward with the MyTunes MP3 Amp.
This 5W monster of a speaker offers incredible sound quality with no distortion. The Amp easily fulfills the wildest fantasies of rock and rollers across the country with its classically rugged design. Not to mention, it easily satisfies the budget of any money conscious student.?
Now, I imagine you must be thinking, But I dont have an iPod? No problem for the MyTunes Amp. This nifty speaker offers the ability to play your mixes and mash-ups from any MP3 player with a 3.5mm jack.
Entirely portable and light enough to hold in the palm of one hand, the Amp runs on 3x AA batteries; providing enough juice for even the most constant raver. Should you need an extra power boost, there is the option to plug the speaker into your computer through USB and save the batteries for a more suitable outing.
The real quality that sets this little speaker apart from the larger and more expensive competitors, is its ability to effortlessly combine portability and volume with the classic rock design.
Having trawled the net to no avail for a speaker that comes close to matching this piece of musical engineering, it seems that the old adage Size doesnt matter really does come into its own with Fireboxs MyTunes MP3 Amp.

    Freeloader
    by Dave Matthews?
Heres the predicament. You love your modern gadgets to communicate, entertain, educate or just be silly with, but these gnaw at your tree-hugging greenie core. No one wants to feel responsible for making Pingu homeless do they?
Enter the Freeloader. Less the random party namesake, more a one-stop sunshine power shop for all manner of electrickery.
The Freeloader is simplicity itself to use, and basically a battery charged using a mini-usb cable, or if exploring deepest Peru or even Wolverhampton, the power of the sun. There are two solar panels that clip into either end of the main body for charging, or that fit together and clip in the bottom for travel, protecting the light harnessing cells.
Power is then transferred to your device using the supplied cable with a range of adaptors covering most applications, or a USB slot to suit proprietary connectors. This also means the end to multiple charges and adaptors taking up half your Peruvian baggage allowance.
Despite having a metal casing, it is a little flimsy, and the unit is rather plasticky. However, my unit has lasted multiple jaunts unscathed and feels just as robustly plasticky as it ever did.
Its easy to use and carry, but does it work? Admirably so, even on cloudy days, just dont expect it to be instant. But thats fine; sit back, relax, and enjoy a nice cup of herbal tea feeling very pleased with your new eco friendly ways while it does its thing.

Read Castles Twitter Story The Case of the Fallen Angel

  • Sep 19, 2010 from movieviral(MovieViral.com) in *
movieviral This years Comic-Con panel for ABCs hit show Castle revealed a new Twitter narrative titled The Case of the Fallen Angel. The show has been using the Twitter account regularly for title character Richard Castle since the first season, and even had a similar narrative during last years summer break. The third season premieres tomorrow (9/20), and The Case of the Fallen Angel has been solved, so weve decided to combine the multitude of 140 character or less parts of the story into one complete narrative that you can read after the break.

First, a little background. In ABCs Castle, Richard Castle is a detective novelist who shadows NYPD detective Kate Beckett as inspiration for his new series of novels about Nikki Heat, using his knowledge to help solve Becketts real crimes. His first book, Heat Wave, was an instant smash last year, and now hes been procrastinating in writing the follow up, Naked Heat, due out September 28th. As we see in the season 2 finale, Beckett almost tells Castle how she feels about him, but Castles ex wife Gina whisks him away to the Hamptons for the summer to finish Naked Heat. With that all in mind, read how Castle spent his summer (Chapters are by date published on Twitter, editing only done to format, not content).

The Case of the Fallen Angel

    July 25th

Fallen Angel dead on Hamptons beach. Looks like murder. Bet I can crack the case B-4 Hamptons P.D.

Here are the ligature marks. Ready to solve a murder, tweeps?

The squad descends to ogle the Angel and cordon off the crime scene. Good times. Captain Compton is growing a stache. Asked him if it was to make his promotion to Captain believable. Hes cranky today. They wont let me near the body but theyre about to turn him over so we can see who it is. Turns out the angel is Tristan Manx. Who will do Johnny Zs concept boards? Guess he wont be painting Gina after all Too soon? Quoth Compton I dont want you sleuthing around, making trouble, Castle. So Ill just chat with people. Get the whats up on the down low.

    July 26th

Had a dream last night I was flying with black wings. Need to find out why Tristan was wearing them when he died. Stopped by the East Hamptons P.D. H.Q. with two boxes of pastry. Compton said sugaring up the precinct wont buy me any favors. He ate two. Did some detective work (aka eavesdropping). Tristan was at a costume theme party Be What You Wish You Were. Careful what you wish for. Comptons interviewing Tristans fellow partygoers. But hes politely thrown me out. Looks like Im going rogue.

    July 27th

Beautiful day to hit the morgue. Lucky for me Asst. ME Sandras a fan (signed Heat Wave I gave her is on her desk). Might get some intel. Sandra snuck me in to see Tristans body (sans wings). Official cause of death: strangulation. Patterned ligature marks still a mystery. Liked all of your octopus attack, rosary beads, and pearl necklace theories for the cause of the ligature marks. Keep thinking! Tox screen results on Manx: .15 alcohol level. T.O.D. 2:00 am. Diagnosis: Dead drunk. Never saw it coming. Compton snuck up on us and grabbed the file, told me to go home and stop being nosy. Might as well have said Stop stinging scorpion! Sandra will keep me informed if I get her an advance look at Naked Heat. Better finish correcting galleys to make our September deadline. You can get an advance look at the first chapter of Naked Heat too here.

    July 28th

Compton can kick me out, but cant stop me investigating ligature marks. Studded belt? Motorcycle gangster? Fashion Maven? Dolce? Gabbana? Went back through your twitter responses for inspiration and I remembered when Tristans dog Buster bit Fergus at the beach. Busters collar and leash were a matching set. Of studded leather! Shout out to @DJPheonyx @jendfaz @chachahutici @Jane0904 @dmg3d @booknerdgirl @onlyshadow @pencilpanda @dpringle I think you were right! I bet Busters collar matches the pattern on his masters neck. Seems mans best friend turned out to be my best clueto the murder weapon!

    July 29th

Who would strangle someone with their dogs leash? Crazy. Wait! Crazy Bullhorn Guy, Fergus! He hated Tristan and his little dog poo! Asst. ME Sandra called. Loved chapter 1 of Naked Heat. Tristans time of death was between 2-3 AM. Maybe Fergus got fed up and decided to teach Tristan a new tricklike how to play deadfur-ever. Comptons gonna love this! Told Compton my shaggy dog tale. For once he doesnt think Im barking up the wrong tree he likes Fergus as a viable suspect. But he says he still doesnt like me enough to let me observe Fergus The Poop Haters interrogation. What a load of crap! (Pun intended). Reminded Compton hed have spent the summer chasing his tail if I hadnt handed him the murder weapon. He agrees. So I get to sit and stay. Comptons unis found Buster wandering the streets with collar, no leash, combed the scene looking for possible murder weapon. Found it! Theyll test the leash for prints. Hold Fergus until they check his alibi. Says he was at...
