    HUFFPOST HILL - JULY 9TH, 2010

  • Jul 09, 2010 from huffpolitics in Politics
huffpolitics As America grappled with the sobering realization that professional athletes like to win and make money, political journalists wrung every last drop of meaning from LeBron James' decision to jettison himself from Cleveland (TELL US AMBINDER, WHAT DOES MIAMI'S NEW LOOK OFFENSE MEAN FOR BREEZY AFTERNOON NEWSLETTERS?). Back in politicsland, a range of stories, both silly and serious, brought this lazy recess to a close. We'll be back on Monday, when we'll hopefully have replied to the Pentagon's (totally serious) query about our showering-with-gays attitudes. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, July 9th, 2010:

GOVT SAYS OIL SPILL COULD BE CONTAINED THIS WEEKEND - Might this spell the end of our relentless "The Gulf increasingly resembles X" quips (today's edition: a bowl of Cocoa Puffs left out in the sun)? For the sake of the Gulf -- and our editors -- we hope so. AP: "The federal official leading the Gulf oil spill cleanup said Friday a new containment cap and an additional ship collecting oil could effectively contain the spill in the next three days The work to replace a leaky containment cap on the well head with a tighter one will begin Saturday, National Incident Commander Thad Allen said. At the same time, a ship connecting to a different part of the leak is expected to come online Sunday. Oil will flow unimpeded into the Gulf during the cap switch for at least part of the weekend. If all goes according to plan, the combination of the cap and the new vessel could collect all the leaking oil by Monday, stopping it from escaping into the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since April 20." http://bit.ly/br4meD

FDIC CHAIR DOESN'T FORESEE A DOUBLE DIP RECESSION - An excerpt from Al Hunt's interview with Shelia Blair, set to air tonight at 7 on Bloomberg: "Our economists, you know, the recovery is slow and sluggish, but it is recovering and we don't see double dipped - a dip recession at this point," Blair told Hunt. "Our economists are unanimous on that point, and so our projections are pretty much staying the way they are. So we think the figures will peak this year. They'll still be elevated next year, but significantly lower than they were this year."

BAIR BACKS ELIZABETH WARREN FOR CFPB - In the same interview, Bair, a widely respected regulator, says that Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard professor who dreamed up the consumer financial protection bureau that is near to becoming law, would make a good first chairwoman. "It's not my call, but I think she certainly has all the qualifications and credentials for that job," Bair said.

WHITE CASTLE, IHOP FANS PANICKING - RedState lit up today, worried that "Obamacare, filled with stealth Nanny State penalties and taxes aimed at further controlling your life, is now threatening the yummy eats found at White Castle and IHOP, among others...The financial hit will make it hard for [White Castle] to maintain its 421 restaurants, let alone create new jobs, says company spokesman Jamie Richardson. " Relax, RedState. Restaurant lobbyists have been running this line for months, but they're working it out. From Robert Pear back in May: "Michael C. Gibbons, chairman of the National Restaurant Association, said, 'The cost of health care reform will be devastating to our industry.' At the same time, he said Friday that the association was working with the UnitedHealth Group to devise affordable health plans for restaurant workers." http://nyti.ms/bICPme

TOMORROW'S PAPERS TODAY - Washignton Post: E.J. Dionne Jr. notes that the classic formulation holds that the Democrats can either move left to excite their base, or move to the center to win back independents. But this approach to the problem is too static, he says. It ignores the fact that many voters respond to facts as they see them or to a party's performance.

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Today is Day 38 of the unemployment extension debacle. Harry Reid said after the last failed Senate vote that once Robert Byrd's replacement is all set, they'll have another vote. Here's the latest from Arthur Delaney: "West Virginia governor Joe Manchin (D) said on MSNBC Friday morning that he needs guidance from the state legislature about when to make an appointment to Byrd's seat and when to hold a special election.... If Manchin names an appointee on Monday morning, it's possible the Senate could approve the House-passed unemployment reauthorization and send it to the president as soon as Friday. When the bill becomes law, people who missed checks will be paid retroactively." http://huff.to/9aiBxX

WEST VIRGINIA GOV. SAYS HE "HIGHLY LIKELY" TO RUN FOR BYRD'S SEAT - AP: "His comments to The Associated Press at the National Governors Association meeting come a day after West Virginia's top lawyer cleared the way for the governor to declare a special election this fall to...

He Says, She Says: Our Beauty Director Responds to Her GQ Husband's Beauty Blog on Blotting Paper

  • Jul 08, 2010 from allure(Allure) in Lifestyle
allure I'm no longer the only beauty-product tester in my housemy husband, by virtue of living for years with a beauty editor, has become a discerning tester. Most guys, when asked what they think about a face scrub or shampoo, might grunt "fine" or "too girly." Not Grady, who works at GQ. He differentiates between the harshness and softness of exfoliating beads, comments on whether a scent is too flowery or not quite woodsy enough, complains about a good product's bad bottle designand thinks up new uses for things. He's now doing a series of product reviewsfrom the male perspective, of courseon gq.com.

Grady recently talked about how much better Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets are at blotting forehead shine than a paper towel from the office kitchenette. I couldn't agree morethese little rubberized sheets are a favorite of the Allure staff, too.

For me, keeping my skin looking grease-freebut not like an overly powdered white maskis all about the right loose powder. Every morning, I buff in Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder with a fluffy powder brush; I swirl the brush in circles at the sides of my nose and on my forehead to really cover the area well. The powder is so light and fine, it doesn't cake.

Here's what else Allure's beauty editors rely on to keep their T-zones in check during heat waves.

"I use the Tatcha Japanese Blotting Papers; they blot away sweat and oil, but don't leave a powdery film on your skin. I always have them on me!" Angelique Serrano, beauty editor

"If I notice my skin is looking a little shinier than usual, I switch my cleanser every few days to something for normal to oily skin (like L'Oral Paris Go 360 Clean Deep Facial Cleanser). I find it soaks up the oil, and my skin is back to normal." Kayleigh Donahue, assistant editor

"When it starts go get hot out, I put away my regular foundation and go for an oil-free, tinted moisturizer instead. I like Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer." Sophia Panych, editorial assistant

Customer ReviewsCase-Mate Naked Case for IPod TouchGREAT PRODUCT - FAST SHIPPING

Pros - Keeps my IPod safe and scratch-free, no bubbles

Cons - A pain to take off to fit my IPod dock, not all headphone or speaker jacks will fit in with case on

It is well worth the money! I wouldn't live without it! I would recommend that people buy it, especially if you hate dealing with the screen protectors.
Over priced and UglyI bought this case on the same day I bought my Ipod Touch 3g. I bought it because it was the only case I could find on the market that covered the whole Ipod including the screen. I wish I would have investigated more. LUCKILY I did not pay full price for it. I bought my off off Ebay and I will admit that this may have contributed to it's original condition but not it's later performance. However, I doubt it would be any better had I bought it directly from the factory.

The first thing I noticed was the "protective screen was scratched right out of the box. I'm talking it came from the factory scratched. I had read a review and had seen some others in person where they talked about it being easy to scratch and even coming scratch......I should have listened. As I used the case (I have only had a it for a month and it is already RUINED it's so easy to scratch) I noticed the "oil spill" problem some people have documented. I wasn't too put off by it as it went away after a while.

In addition to the front being easily scratched the back cover was just as prone. Also it seemed to be a magnet for debris. Some how all the dirt seemed to creep into the case or collect around it. It's also very hard to get the dirt out.

I also found the volume and sleep buttons really hard to access. Not to mention it's really hard to get any third party headphone or power cord to work. Not a huge deal, something an adapter fixes but annoying.

I also found upon removing the case to clean it out (which I had to do once a week) it put two linear scractes in the back of the Ipod on the first removal/replacing cycle. Come on......a case that scratches.....

The final straw was when the protective screen cover began to delaminate. Literally the film over top of the screen cover started bubbling up. It began around the home button and spread in all directions. I found that I could re-stick it if the temperature was below 60. But come 61 and it came up again. And even below 60 it would slowly come undone. I WILL admit that i found out later this is a disposable cover that is...

The best that I've ever used

I've been using these for a few years now and I love them for a number of reasons:1. The sheets are thick enough to absorb a large amount of oil and my face is obviously matte after use.2. Unlike tissue-paper-esque sheets, oily spots show up clearly so that it's very obvious which parts of the sheet are already saturated.3. The sheets have no obvious scent.4. The container is great. It's enclosed on all sides (unlike some booklets of blotting paper), so the sheets stay well-protected and clean. The tacky strip on the lid makes pulling out a single sheet much easier. If you accidentally grab an extra sheet, it's simple enough to fold it and tuck it back into the pocket (no waste).5. The price isn't amazing, but it's less than many inferior competing products that I've tried, so I can handle it.6. They're easy to come by and small enough to stash everywhere. Great for oil absorption!

I love these oil absorbing sheets. I found out about these from a fellow oily faced person that swore by them. I have tried numerous ones in the past and they either did not absorb enough oil or they left my face with a ghastly white hue because they deposited powder. The fact that the sheet turns clear once it has absorbed oil is satisfying...so you know if you have to use another sheet. Also, my makeup stays intact and appears refreshed after use. I keep these in my purse and at my desk at work. I definitely recommend them. 5/5 PlasticJackie (Miami) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Work but slower

One sheet absorbs a lot of oil, so these blotting sheets are very economical. Mind that these sheets are thick plastic-y type, not paper-based! The downside to this is slow absorption so the sheet is in contact with the skin longer than paper-based sheets. This may cause irritation. I don't use them very often for this reason, usually paper sheets are enough. 3/5 Anuk - See all my reviews This review is from: Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets, 50-Count Sheets (Pack of 2) (Misc.)
