Jesus the miracle worker, a historical & theological study

About this book
"Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching&proclaiming&and healing every disease and every sickness among the people."(Mt 4:23)Few today doubt that Jesus was viewed by many of his contemporaries as a miracle worker. And many scholars today would agree that Jesus was a healer and an exorcist. But what does this mean? Was Jesus simply a master at relieving psychological distress, a healer of psychosomatic illness, a purveyor of paranormal therapy? What distinguished Jesus from other miracle workers of the ancient world? And what should we make then of his stilling the storm, his walking on the sea, his feeding of the five thousand? In this study of the miracles of Jesus, Graham Twelftree extensively examines the miracles within each Gospel narrative. He evaluates Jesus' own understanding of the miracles, weighs the historical reliability of the miracle stories, and considers the question of miracles and the modern mind. This book maps and explores the borderlands between the affirmations of faith and the conclusions of historical method. Are some miracles simply more open to historical verification than others? With the historical study of Jesus once again capturing the attention of the media and the public, this timely book courageously steps forward to investigate the hard questions.Jesus the Miracle Workeris a comprehensive and textbook study of the miracles of Jesus, written by a recognized expert in the historical investigation of the exorcisms of Jesus.

Subversive Virtue, Asceticism and Authority in the Second-Century Pagan World

Creator: James A. Francis | History - 2008-01-31

26 In many respects, the nature and function of holy men actually changed very little from the archaic period on.127 As for the conflation of philosophers, miracle workers, and holy men, this phenomenon was not a new product of the ...

About this book
Students of the Roman Empire no less than those who are interested in early Christianity will find Francis's study requisite for comprehending the evolution of the pagan and Christian ascetic movements of late antiquity.-Paul B. Harvey, Jr., Penn State UniversityMuch attention has been devoted in recent years to Christian asceticism in Late Antiquity. But Christianity did not introduce asceticism to the ancient world. An underlying theme of this fascinating study of pagan asceticism is that much of the work on Christian "holy men" has ignored earlier manifestations of asceticism in Antiquity and the way Roman society confronted it. Accordingly, James Francis turns to the second century, the "balmy late afternoon of Rome's classical empire," when the conflict between asceticism and authority reached a turning point. Francis begins with the emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180), who warned in his Meditations against "display[ing] oneself as a man keen to impress others with a reputation for asceticism or beneficence." The Stoic Aurelius saw ascetic self-discipline as a virtue, but one to be exercised in moderation. Like other Roman aristocrats of his day, he perceived practitioners of ostentatious physical asceticism as a threat to prevailing norms and the established order. Prophecy, sorcery, miracle working, charismatic leadership, expressions of social discontent, and advocacy of alternative values regarding wealth, property, marriage, and sexuality were the issues provoking the controversy. If Aurelius defined the acceptable limits of ascetical practice, then the poet Lucian depicted the threat ascetics were perceived to pose to the social status quo through his biting satire. In an eye-opening analysis of Philostratus's Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Francis shows how Roman society reined in its deviant ascetics by "rehabilitating" them into pillars of traditional values. Celsus's True Doctrine shows how the views pagans held of their own ascetics influenced their negative view of Christianity. Finally, Francis points out striking parallels between the conflict over pagan asceticism and its Christian counterpart. By treating pagan asceticism seriously in its own right, Francis establishes the context necessary for understanding the great flowering of asceticism in Late Antiquity.

    a disappointment for me

After 3 weeks use, this lightened some brown spots I have on my face and hands. But then I had a reaction I guess. I stopped using it til the places went away and tried again. Then I had another place come up. It's still there after a week. It's faded to pink but still raised. I've already returned this. I gave 2 stars because it did lighten my skin. 2/5 nc mtn gurl (north toe river) - See all my reviews This review is from: Philosophy Miracle Worker Retinoid Pads, 60 Count & Solution 2 fl. oz. A True Miracle!

I love this moisturizer, my face is not the same without it! I am 34 and I have been using this product for about 5 months and 1 of those months I was without it. My grandmother who is 68 also uses this and says her skin feels like the elasticity is better. She said "the lines on my face from the night of sleep usually takes awhile to disappear in the morning but after using this they disappear right away". I could tell the difference in my face as well, after 2 weeks without it, it just wasn't the same! It helps the tone, texture and softness on my face and parts of my body (I use it on my upper back & sometimes upper arms). It is a little pricey and this is why I turned to Amazon for the best price. I received about $5-$10 off of the original price offered at Philosophy (not much, but any little bit helps). I get compliments all the time on my skin and since using this product they can't help to notice my glow! Worth it! 5/5 Natasha* - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Sensitive Skin Beware

Though I love, love, love, Hope In A Jar, Miracle Worker just didn't work for me. If you have sensitive skin, think long and hard. It is rich and creamy and smells lovely. For myself, it caused a reaction: red, flushed and sore skin. I wish you well; for others it delivers, but for me, I'll stick with what I (now) know. 2/5 J. Excellent Product

After having had patches of skin on my face literally burned by the toxic junk Cindy Crawford hocks on TV, this product is an absolute blessing. I received a sample and upon testing a small amount behind my ear (yes, Cindy traumatized me), I gave it shot. This is, by far the best moisturizer I have ever tried. It goes on very light and feels cool and refreshing on my skin. The best part about it is that it is not at all greasy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff.I haven't been using it very long so I can't say that I've experienced and anti-aging benefits but, just at a moisturizer, it is fabulous. 5/5 Fortunata - See all my reviews This review is from: Philosophy Miracle Worker Anti-Aging Moisturizer, 2 Ounce (Misc.) Maybe I am to naive and a cheerleader for Miracle in general. I have been a religious user for about 6 years maybe more. I tried this for 2 days and started seeing results. I used to be on a medication that broke my skin out but they were bumps & never really formed anything more but they always left little white discoloration scars. I did this for two days and thought no way. So I took a picture of a mark that was left, used miracle for another week and sure enough it looked like it did at 2 days... Ok ok it was even better but there was no white mark at all GONE - which is PERFECT to me.I will keep using it because I have freckles lighter skin than other spots and red tinges too. I can tell a difference in that also not as dramatic, but noticeable. The liquid is actually makeup color but nothing rubs off at night with a towel or anything else - This is NOT a self-tanning solution. I think it is for discolorations which to date has been awesome. 5/5 T. GILL "Stay Healthy" (Ny, NY) - See all my reviews, January 20, 2012

I had NO IDEA what I was putting on my face

I'm writing this in hopes that maybe someone will get enlightened like I've been. First of all do I like what this product did for my face wrinkles and condition? YES....it does work and for me it worked better than anything I've ever tried. I'm 53 and have very dry skin with wrinkles around my mouth and eyes. This product did lessen the wrinkles and make my face feel smooth and soft. However after reading Suzanne Somers new book which talks about all the toxins we ingest and smear on ourselves I went and looked at the ingredient list in my philosophy products ( I have EVERYTHING they sell) and I was horrified. I went along with thinking this product line was safe and somewhat natural. I was wrong. The ingredient list for this product alone is only partially listed on this website.this is what I found to be the ingredient list on makeupalley.com which has always had the most up to date info on items.miracle worker miraculous anti-aging concentrate: water... 1/5 Elana M. Still on the fence

There are so many Philosophy products, I have a hard time knowing what my skin could really benefit from as far as their line is concerned. I figured I'd go with a moisturizer with SPF to start. It is super lightweight, I almost wonder if its working, and haven't been out in the sun yet to really know. I love the lightweight feel, I just hope it works. I don't like the smell of this product at all, and I sometimes mix it with my old moisturizer (that I found out doesn't work!) just to tolerate the smell. As far as moisture goes, I can't exactly tell the difference. My skin doesn't feel amazing after using it or anything. I just hope it has beneficial ingredients in it that are good for my skin and I've been told you can really trust the Philosophy name. I hope to learn more about the line. Great overall eye product!

I had been introduced to this product at Sephora while I was shopping for face lotions, eye creams and makeup for my wedding. I was given samples of the Miracle eye cream along with a few others that are even more expensive, and I felt that this one did the trick to adequately moisturize, tighten and decrease the dark circles & puffiness I usually have every day. The cream is thick and a little goes a long way for me. It doesn't feel like it has too much water in the product (which I learned can actually DRY out your skin) and also for sensitive skin like mine, doesn't burn after days or weeks of using it. I would highly recommend this product compared to some others that may be more expensive. 5/5 Cate - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not bad

Nothing negative to report about this product. It's thick but absorbs quickly, and I noticed that the skin under my eyes was smoother after using it, although I haven't noticed any miracles as far as those under-eye lines go. I do think the price is too high, but that is the case with all Philosophy products. 4/5 Melissa Niksic (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews, January 7, 2012

    Great, yes...but pricey.

Great product but the portion size is laughable. Used it all in a little over a week and I'm not habitually pump heavy. Personally, I don't find it worth the cost but I don't have anything negative to report about the product itself. I would suggest splurging for the bigger size. 4/5 JessicaH - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Philosophy Miracle Worker Eye Cream, 0.45-Ounce (Misc.) Personally, I don't find it worth the cost but I don't have anything negative to report about the product itself. I would suggest splurging for the bigger size. It's a Miracle!

Two years ago I made the switch to Philosophy Skin care, begining with the Philosophy Hope line (Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash(AM) applied with Clarisonic, Hope In a Jar SPF(AM), Help Me(PM), Purity(PM) applied with Clarisonic, Help Me(PM), When Hope is Not Enough (WHINE)Serum(PM), Eye Hope(AM & PM), Oxygen Facial every couple of weeks before events). I thought my skin looked the best it could possibly look at may age - 56 in a few days with aging combination skin, very fair with a tendency to redness, the type of skin where every blemish or discoloration is glaringly evident. The Philosophy Hope line corrected most of the discoloration, lines, enlarged pores -- a great overall improvement in clarity and firmnes - similar to the complexion of my 40s.In September, I purchased the Miracle Worker (MW) Kit and have been transitioning over to it, Miracle Worker Wed PM, Thurs, Fri, Sat Hope Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed AM until I run out of my Hope products - then I will switch to... 5/5 Susan C. extremely disappointed

I've used Philosophy products for years and was excited to try the Miracle Worker line. I've never had problems with any skin care products in the past but decided to tried the 15 day sample set 1st. Having good results with the samples I purchased the full size set. Beginning on day 2 I started getting a few red spots on my cheeks & forehead. Stopped using & waited til the spots cleared up then began with 1 at a time. Back came the spots. I've quit using & switched to a different line. My face has cleared up but I will never use this line again. As I had no problems with the samples it causes me to wonder about Philosophy's quality control. A few months ago I returned the 32 oz. bottle of Amazing Grace shower gel as it absolutely would not suds up. 1/5 Elizabeth - See all my reviews This review is from: Philosophy Miracle Worker Full Size Kit (Pads 60 Count, Moisturizer 2 Ounces, Concentrate 1 Ounce, Retinoid Solution 2 Ounces) (Misc.) Miracle?

I had such high hopes for these products, based on the reviews. Unfortunatey, it caused my face to break out and irritated my skin. It looks worse than before i started using it. I've stuck with it for over two weeks hoping for improvement. No such luck. It was a waste of money for me. 2/5 MIC.IN.FL - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great serum

I love the Philosophy line of skin care. I have sensitive skin but have no negative reactions to the concentrate. It feels nice and light on my skin. I think it will take several weeks before I can say it really helps. 5/5 KareeGirl - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It really is almost miraculous!

I ordered this for my mother who is in her 80s. She's been using this product for a little over a year & won't be without it. It has made such a difference in her skin -- smoother texture, increased brightness & lessening of wrinkle appearance. I've tried to use it, but my skin is extremely sensitive & it caused acne blemishes. Wish it worked for me like it has worked for my mother! The price was incredible so she got 3 at one time (the shelf life is about 2 years once the product is opened). They arrived on time, were brand-new & in excellent condition. I will continue to order these for her. 5/5 L. Carlson - See all my reviews, November 4, 2011
