D., PROFESSOR OP MATERIA MEDICA AND THERAPEUTICS, AND OF CLINICAL MEDICINE IN THE HAHNEMANN MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL, OF CHICAGO. "Cough, considered physiologically, consists, first, in a long inspiration which fills the lungs to a greater extent than usual; second, in the closure of the glottis, or narrow opening in the organ of voice at the commencement of the act of expiration; and third, in the sudden forcing open of the glottis by the violence of the expiratory movement. In this way a blast of air is driven upward from the lungs through the mouth, which carries with it any sources of irritation that may have been present in the air-passages. Cough may occur from irritation in the back of the throat, in the larynx, trachea, or bronchial tubes, and may be excited by acrid vapors, by irritant gases, or by articles of food and drink--such as even a drop of water or a crumb of bread--making their way into the air-passages instead of into the pharynx, or by excessive or morbid secretion from the walls of the air-tubes, or even by the entrance of cold air, when the lining membrane of the air-passages is abnormally irritable. "It is not very easy to explain to non-professionals how cough is produced. From the medulla oblongata, or uppermost part of the spinal cord, there is given off a very important nerve called, from its distribution to the lungs and stomach, the pneumogastric nerve, which contains both sensory and motor filaments. The sensory filaments are distributed to the mucous lining of the larynx, trachea, etc. Any of the irritating substances already mentioned may produce an impression upon these sensory filaments ...

    Best facial moisturizer I've ever used....

    My mother used this every day when I was growing up and so I started using it sometime in highschool when I would have dry skin on my face or was peeling from sun exposure, etc. I don't have dry skin, but there are times when I need this lotion, mostly when it's really cold or when I've been out in the sun, but it works well under my makeup, it doesn't cause break outs, and it doesn't burn or have an odor. So, I'm definitely hooked on this stuff.     This is a fantastic product from Clinique. It absorbs very quickly into your skin and does not leave a greasy feeling behind. When I first started using it I was wary because of the price. You can get their 3 step skin care for $50 on their website. That is a little costly but well worth it.     Inaccurate pricing

    Clinique and Sephora sell the 4.2 ounce pump for $24.50 at regular retail cost. I really dislike when Amazon sellers claim a much higher retail price to make it appear they are selling items at a discount, when in fact they are overcharging customers.     Excellent, fragrance free lotion

    I buy clinique lipstick because it is one of the few lipsticks without perfume (I know, who'd want their lips perfumed?!) anyways I got a small sample bottle of this lotion, stuck it into my makeup bag and didn't use it for months, then, one day, on a whim, I thought I'd give it a go, after an experimental sniff (to make sure it was fragrance free) I smoothed a little across my cheeks and nose.My skin is so dry that sometimes it looks like I've been using powder on it. I also have keratosis pilaris (build up of keratin that leaves tiny dry bumps all over, so pretty) and psoriasis (yep, doubly blessed) so my skin is super sensitive. I have to use goats milk soap (unscented of course) and unscented deodorant (a rash in the armpits is hella painful, believe me) all my detergent is unscented same with dish soap, hand soap and shampoo. I don't use astringents, masks or facial scrubs (the one time I tried one my face turned fiery red and tiny red lines criscrossed it like a... 4/5 Jennifer L.     You couldn't pay me to use this stuff again

    This is probably the ONLY item in Clinique's lineup that needs a change. It's got MINERAL OIL (Paraffinum Liquidum) as one of the top ingredients. It's fine if you don't mind clogged pores. For the price, it's not worth it. Mineral oil is a cheap by-product of petroleum, and has been shown to clog pores. Ever notice how when you rub on baby oil (also mineral oil) after a shower, the water beads up? That's because it CLOGS YOUR PORES. Literally, it LOCKS in moisture, among anything else that might be on your skin.No thanks.     I have always had a hard time looking for a pressed powder that's compatible to my skin.     I received this free promo gift with purchase last fall, after buying a Clinique item at a major dept store. The two cosmetic bags have a cheery citrus/flower print. The skincare products are awesome for travel (Dramatically Different Moisture is great as always, didn't much care for the 7 Day Scrub) or to just "try out." The lip and eye colors are all neutral and compliment lots of skin tones. The mascara is a basic deep black, with a full sized applicator brush. The Chubby Stick is a full size (in store you had the option of either Strawberry or Melon, but both leave a nice sheer pink tint)! Plums and mauves have always looked nice with my complexion and these are perfect!     Great Trio-A must have makeup staple!

    I generally stick to base colors (browns, tans, grey, and black) and this trio is one of my favorites and a staple in my make-up bag. The shades in the one I purchased-and the one pictured (I think) are Chocolate Chip-Stay Matte (definer), Buttered Bonze (single shade-contour) and Teddy Bear (single shade-base) I rarely use the pink/brown contour color, but I use the base and definer almost every time I wear make up.     I have very problematic skin so I'm always trying out new products in search of beautiful skin. My sister-in-law recommended Clinique's line of skin care products, so I decided since I'd tried everything else, I'd give this one a shot too! I have been so pleased with the results.     clinique has changed my skin

    I recently walked in to a Clinique make up counter with some pretty severe skin issues. My skin was cracking and my make up was a blotchy mess. I REALLY looked bad in that tell all department store lighting. I got a consultation and a freemakeover from the woman behind the counter. When she started with a big list of products I would need for skin improvement, I got a little skeptical, and didn't want to spend a lot of money. But I wanted results so I figured I would try. I have to say for my skin this has been one of the best investments I have made. It is so gentle and light, and comes out in a foam. My skin feels like heaven after a facial wash. As was recommended to me, as a compliment after I wash my face, the mild clarifying lotion. This gentle toner debuffs those dead skin cells. These products are wonderful for dry skin, or if you are like me I have severely sensitive oily skin, and this has not made me greasy at all.     Skin feels dry for a few minutes after but so worth it...

    I agree that it makes your (or my anyway) skin feel a bit dry but the reason I say it's worth it is because:1. it's clinique. The best skin care products I've been able to find over the years, for my skin anyway, which is combination if not leaning toward dry.2. It's gentle enough without being too gentle and what I mean by that is that if you went any softer, your face wouldn't feel like it was getting cleaned - you'd feel like you were cleaning it with a lotion, e.g. as skin feels when cleaning with Cetaphil liquid soap. All you need to do is put on your face lotion and/or cream when you get out of the shower and you're good to go. At times I forget to put on lotion and I do notice my skin feeling a tiny bit tight but within 20 minutes or so that feeling is gone.
