Seven Important Social Media Trends For The Next Year

  • Sep 12, 2010 from hgreenwood(Heinz Grünwald) in Technology
hgreenwood Social media changes from month to month. Trends come and go quicker than the seasons change. The latest trendy site could be next years Myspace and the hottest new site probably hasnt even been conceived yet or is at the couple of guys in a garage stage. Having said that there are some trends that I think will continue over the coming year and with that in mind I wanted to share them here. Rather than focusing in on the finer detail I have compiled the list below in broader terms with all the main players represented. All in all it should be an exiting year ahead in social media and these should be seven of the main trends
    Group Buying
This really has been the huge power house of online commerce in the last year. Services like Groupon have come on the scene in a big way (Even Microsoft entered the market today) and the idea behind it really is so simple that it makes you think Why didnt I think of that. Like all kick ass ideas this one is incredibly simple and instantly understandable and there is something in it for everybody. The idea is nothing new but giving it legs through things like apps and the ability to share deals with friends makes the whole sector spread faster. Expect this to continue in a big way over the next couple of years with copy cat services and the big players rolling in to more territories and rolling out better and more extensive deals.
    Question And Answer Sites
These sites are hardly new and have been around for years but a new range of social features and bigger audiences have seen existing sites and some innovative start ups make this an interesting space once again. The big boys like Facebook are rolling this out as we speak to their huge user base and will be making it front and center on profiles as they look to tap in to the collective knowledge of the site. Another innovative start up that is making some serious noise within the tech community is Quora which should break out in to the main stream this coming year. Collective knowledge is incredibly powerful and social media is making that knowledge easier to spread.
    Mobile
I was going to call this section location but I really do think the opportunities in this sector extend far beyond people checking in to bars for free coffee. There is no doubt that services like Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook places will continue to grow and be adopted by a larger audience but I dont even think the most exciting technologies have even been invented in this space yet. The best is yet to come. The really exciting thing to consider is what can be achieved with mobile advertising and with all the big players including Google and Apple trying to crack this market the real innovation has yet to come. People all over the world are walking around with mini computers in their hands and you can basically let your imagination run wild with the endless possibilities that offers to the social media industry.
    Facebook Credits
Facebook have been dipping their toes in to the credits system of micro payments over the last 6 months by giving users free credits to help them get used to the system as well as doing a massive deal with Zynga to add the credits to their games. I strongly believe Facebook credits will become one of the defining moments in Facebooks history and be the cash cow that drives them forward towards IPO. With Facebook taking a cut of the credits and brands and businesses scrambling to use them there really will only be one winner in all of this. Expect Facebook credits to be ubiquitous across the web within 2 years as people use the trusted platform to by all sorts of things.
    Branded Content
Brands and businesses are starting to realize that one of the main ways of engaging their customers and offering value is to create content that enriches the users social media experience rather than just blasting messages out at them. With users starting to get more and more aware of ads and adding their own filters the smart brands will create bespoke content that engages users in a meaningful way and offers value. Building that content in to Facebook and other social sites while all hooking back to their own website will be crucial with video playing a more and more important role in the branded content play.
    Twitter Monetizing
They sure are taking their time on this one but they are very much at the stage Facebook were 18 months ago when they just went on a land grab of users and made sure their service was as stable as possible. Twitter have started rolling out some monetization features like promoted tweets but they havent really come in with the hard sell just yet. Id expect Twitter to keep focusing on growth for the best part of the next year before switching on the revenue in a major way just like Facebook are at the moment.
    Google To Keep On Failing
I dont care how many people Google hire or companies they buy they are always going to struggle in the social media space. They dont have it in their DNA as a company to be social as far as...

Halo: Reach Pre-Orders Pass Two Million Worldwide

  • Sep 09, 2010 from gamrFeed(gamrFeed by VGChartz) in *
gamrFeed It was never in doubt that Halo: Reach would be one of the biggest games of the year, but with the release of the game now less than a week away, VGChartz brings you the latest pre-order figures and week one predictions.
Anybody who has been following our Americas Pre-Orders charts will have seen that total pre-orders in the Americas (USA, Canada, Latin America) has now surpassed 1.6 million units and that the pre-order pattern for Halo: Reach to date has been very similar to that of the XBox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 released last year as shown in the comparison graph below:

Outside of the Americas, total pre-orders to date have surpassed 500,000 units with nearly half of that coming from the United Kingdom. We expect total pre-orders to hit just over 2.5 million units prior to launch, suggesting a day one of around 3 million units and a week one of around 4.25 million units (using pre-order to week one ratios for similar titles). To see how this compares with other recent mega-hits see the table below:

VGChartz expects Halo: Reach to perform very similarly to the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 in the Americas, but going by historical trends and Reach pre-orders to date, sales in EMEAA (Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Asia) will only represent around 30% of the Americas sales compared to 50% for a typical Call of Duty title on Xbox 360 - hence why worldwide totals are predicted to fall short of Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360. That said, we do expect Reach to perform around 10% higher than Halo 3 did in the first week and become the fastest-selling Halo title of all time.

Halo: Reach releases on September 14th exclusively for Xbox 360. Be sure to check back after launch where VGChartz will reveal our estimates for week one figures.

Coming Soon From Twitter: THE MOST AMAZING CLIENT YOUVE NEVER SEEN

  • Jul 19, 2010 from techcrunch(TechCrunch)
techcrunch When Twitter bought Atebits in April, a lot of us were excited about the possibilities. After all, Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) was the company behind Tweetie, the best iPhone Twitter client and arguably the best desktop Twitter client as well (though Mac-only). Developers, however, were not as enthusiastic. Many wondered what it meant for the state of the Twitter third-party ecosystem.
So far, the results of theacquisitionseem to have worked out well for everyone. Tweetie for the iPhone was reborn as Twitter for iPhone. And while its largely the same, it has added a few bells and whistles thanks to the tighter Twitter integration. But other third-party clients, such as Seesmic and TweetDeck, have continued to thrive as well.
But make no mistakes, Twitter is still working on the next killer client.
As Brichter tweeted out today, Why yes, it is hard building THE MOST AMAZING CLIENT YOUVE NEVER SEEN when the API is exploding. Its not clear if this is a new version of Twitter for iPhone or if its the long in-the-works next version of Tweetie for Mac (which will undoubtedly be called Twitter for Mac now) though Id bet the latter. Or it could be a native version of the Twitter app for the iPad something which is also known to be in the works.
A few tweets later, Brichter responded to a question about Twitter for iPad. Someone asked him, Will the iPad version be like tweetie for iPhone but bigger? Brichters response: Nope. If Twitter for iPad is going to be more than a upscaled version of Twitter for iPhone, perhaps that is the amazing client Brichter isreferringto.
Of course, Brichter sent that tweet from Tweetie for Mac if that means anything. Interestingly enough, Tweetie for Mac now links back to twitter.com (it used to link to the Atebits page).
Regardless of what this new killer client coming out of Twitter is, the community must appreciate the fact that Twitters own internal projects are subject to the same API limits as everyone else. Recently, this has become a big issue as usage is exploding.
Earlier this year, Twitters Alex Payne (who has since left the company) tweeted about testing some new features that may make users not want to use a desktop client. This had many in the Twitter developer ecosystem freaking out. But really, its somewhat silly to expect Twitter not to want to put the best client possible out there. It never seems like a good idea not to do your best work just so someone else can. Instead, it makes sense to make third-parties aim higher, and push you and vice versa.
Twitter may be ready to do just that with whatever this new client is.

The Battle Against Junk Mail: Be a Jerk About It!

  • Jun 14, 2011 from blinker1315(Russ Smith) in Business
blinker1315 Dear Direct Mailers: I have one credit card, it’s not doing so hot, and I’m smart enough not to mitigate these damages by opening up another wound which will invariably fester. Bloodletting is way too old school for me. I’m bored and frustrated by your endless reams of junk mail. I know that you’ll occasionally find a sucker whose oblivious optimism or abject hopelessness will blind them to your fine print, but I am not that person. I’ll even venture far enough to say that a vast majority of your marks aren’t those people. Your efforts to entice and ensnare are relatively impotent, so why do you continue? When it comes to advertising, we’ve been honed into cynical, doubtful people, thanks in no small part to x-ray specs and real, flying ghosts hawked from the back of comic books, or promises of generic pills which enlarge and/or harden and/or grant our unmentionables mystical properties.

Twitter Just Killed Something Else: Their Own Website. Twitter For iPad Is That Good.

  • Sep 01, 2010 from beisr(Ben Israel)
beisr Are you addicted to Twitter? Do you have an iPad? Even if the answer to both is no right now, after you see Twitter for iPad, those answers are going to change quickly.
Yes, the wait is over. Launching tonight in the App Store is Twitter for iPad the first official native iPad app from the company. We all knew it was coming (Twitter even said so a few months ago), but it has been a long wait. It was definitely worth it.
Like most people, I wander into hyperbole from time to time. But it has now been a few days since I first played with Twitter for iPad, and I still think it is hands-down the best iPad app out there. Its that good. With all due respect to Reeder, Instapaper, Flipboard, and Pulse, this is now going to be my go-to app for just about everything related to reading news. Its simply such a great experience for reading tweets and more importantly, reading the links your friends share.
What Twitter (and developer Loren Brichter specifically) has done is create an amazing user experience for reading information. This is thanks to an intuitive user interface that layers on top of itself. So, for example, if I click on a link in my tweet stream, Ill have a new layer that rolls over to show that webpage in a customized browser window. If youve used Flipboard, its somewhat similar, but better because its much easier to go back to where ever you previously were before you clicked the link. You simply swipe something to the side to move it temporarily or swipe it again to get it off the screen (in portrait mode anyway, where theres less space).
Something else thats awesome: when you highlight a tweet by clicking on it, its now pinned to the top or bottom of the screen as you scroll through your stream. This is great if its something you want to reference. A lot of thought has been put into these type of saving state actions within this app. Its simple to save a draft and go back to it, for example (much easier than with Twitter for iPhone). Or to reference one of these pinned tweets in your own tweet.
There are also some great new gestures that Twitter came up with for this app. For example, if you pinch-outward on a tweet, it will unfold to show you more information about the Twitter user. Better may be the way you can swipe down with two fingers on any tweet to see a full conversation in context. Its the little things like this that make the app great Apple-like, even.

Overall, the app looks and feels quite a bit different from Twitter for iPhone (which Twitter built from Tweetie Brichters client that they acquired earlier this year). But Twitters Leland Rechis assures me its using all the same stuff on the backend. In fact, Twitter is now a universal app meaning its one app that will work on both the iPhone and iPad, it will just look different depending on which device youre using it on.
Rechis also says Twitter started experimenting with some newer things on the iPad version that havent yet been brought to the iPhone version, butundoubtedlywill. A great example here is that when you click through to a users profile page, youll see at the bottom a list of users similar to that user that you may like to follow.
Rechis also notes the importance of the logged-out view something Twitter worked on before the iPhone version launch. Twitter wants to make the service as useful as possible to people even if they dont have an account. The idea, of course, is that theyll hopefully sign up for one and this app may give them the most reason to yet. When logged out, youll be able to see tweet streams based on hot topics.
Tweets in general are not just what Im doing, they have an incredible amount of metadata, Rechis says speaking to why they created this layering idea for the app. Almost 25 percent of all tweets now have a link in them, he says. This app is perfect for those tweets, and content consumption and exploration in general.
Rechis notes that one of his favorite things about tablets is how they eliminate window management. At the same time, you need some way to manage all this information. He notes that Brichters original concept was stacks of sheets of paper that you quickly shuffle through. Other members of Twitter including Rechis refined that idea and the end result is Twitter for iPad.
Thats 750 words about the app but you really just need to see it, and use it. It will definitely be my go-to way to browse Twitter from now on. Its that good.
