Iranian Forces in Iraq? (Raised Eyebrow Alert)

  • Jun 26, 2007 from lostmyleggins
lostmyleggins Up front: I'm extremely skeptical about this story. It just doesn't ring true that something this important is being leaked by UK tabloid The Sun, in between their celebrity reports and cheesecake photo spreads. But here it is: Iranian forces...

    The Hd Media Future

    The HD Media future

Everyone knows that media format wars have historical significance in the world of technology. Remember the most notorious battle between the Beta max and the VHS? The winner of such battles will make millions even billions. Later we had the upgrade of tape to CD, a revolution in music. In 1980 the Philips/Sony compact disc standard was finalized and nobody has looked back for the last 26 years (until mp3s came along).

Well as ever there is a new media battle but who will win again is yet unknown. This modern forest of technological mass has produced a new insurgency: THE HIGH DEFINITION WAR. Blu-ray vs HD-DVD are two competing formats which are eventually going to replace DVDs. As you look around at your local electric retailers you can see changes happening in the broadcast world, not only are we changing from our conventional CRT screens to Flat screen but also to HD ready TV. The impact this has on our lives is not as large as black and white to colour, but nevertheless a change that will definitely be a benchmark for future media.
    Why New formats?

The reason we have introduced these new formats is that your traditional DVD can hold a maximum of 9.4 GB (Dual Layer) of information. This is not enough for HD broadcast as the information required is higher, being a resolution of 19201080. Blu-ray discs can hold 50 GB (Dual Layer) and HD-DVD 30 GB (Dual Layer).

These new discs cannot be played on normal DVD players but on new HD media players of which examples are Samsung BDP 1000 (Blu-Ray), Sony Playstation 3 (Blu-Ray), Toshiba HDXA1 (HD-DVD). This means spending more money for better resolution.
    Price

This is always important especially when new models of media come out; at first it is always expensive as supply out strips demand. The players are expensive, the cheapest being the Playstation 3 supposedly retailing at 549. Blu-Ray media also being expensive; similar to DVDs when they first came out (taking inflation into consideration), blank media costing from 11.99 to 24.99.

To play a Blu-ray Disc on a PC has brought about a price concern. The fact that you have to purchase a HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) Graphic card, along with a HD monitor, not to mention a Blu-ray Drive and media, controversially may bring about decrease in sales. This is presently being contested with new Laptops and PCs that are Blu-ray compatible, look at the New Vaio VGN-AR21S.

The HD players need to be up to scratch on price. The Toshiba HD-DVD player retailing at almost half the price of the Blu-ray Samsung player creates even more competition between the two media. This could encourage sales of HD-DVD over Blu-ray, even though its rumoured that Toshiba will be making a loss initially.

Prices of movies doesnt seem to be as high as anticipated; a Blu-ray movie House of flying daggers from amazon.com will set you back .95 (10.68). This may encourage sales. Movies in HD-DVD identical in price, yet Blu-ray is a larger size disc.
    Upscaling

Another problem HD may face is that the new DVD players have the upscaling technology ie. DVD is played at 480p but upscalers upgrade the image to 720p or 1080i. This produces a picture which is of high quality to the untrained eye, in fact even the trained eye has difficulty distinguishing between the two. The difference is seen on a 50 inch HD projector and looking right up close. So the question is will 1080p be much different to 1080i? Will people fork out the added expense when they know that a cheaper DVD upscaler will create more or less the same effect?
    Media Backup

Software and Hardware companies have invested a lot of money in subsidising HD media. Samsung, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, LG, Sony, TDK, JVC and Sharp support Blu-ray and Toshiba and Microsoft back HD-DVD. Hollywood movie studios Disney, Paramount, Warner, Sony, Eagle rock, Fox and MGM and Lions gate support Blu-ray also. None of these large companies would take such a gamble if they didnt know that this is what the consumer wants.
    PlayStation 3

Sony love to bring out their own media whether its Sony Duo Sticks or Sony Mini Discs. Their hunger to dominate the consumer market has always been there and this is nothing different. The Playstation 3 will play Blu-Ray discs, still having the ability to play older media like DVDs and CDs. The success of the predecessors PS1 and PS2 will give much anticipation to the release of this new console and is what Sony are hoping will convert people to use Blu-Ray. A Sony spokesman has predicted that Blu-Ray will dominate the HD market within 12 months.

The encouraging feature with HD-DVD is the name, everyones ears will ring with the name and automatically assume that this is a high definition movie. Asking someone in the street what Blu-ray is will bring looks of confusion, along with the fact that both will produce similar quality pictures.

Scoring Sunday's Nuptials: Olympic Champion Wins Gold In Relay Race of Love [Altarcations]

  • Jul 11, 2010 from gawker(Gawker) in Entertainment
gawker What do Olympic gold medalists in nordic skiing do in the summer? They get married. Join Olympics nerd and Gawker wedding expert Phyllis Nefler as she parses today's New York Times weddings announcements. She goes for the gold every day.
Earlier this year, a small group of US athletes pulled off one of the more unlikely Olympic runs and came away with some unexpected medals. It wasn't the hockey team, and it wasn't the skiers: it was the guys competing in the nordic combined, a quirky little event that merges ski jumping with cross country skiing and garnered little-to-no attention here in the United States.
But in my default winter position as a lump on the couch, I watched the nail-biting finish. And was then maybe moved to write about it:

Seconds ahead of him, winning the US's first-ever Nordic gold, was Billy Demong. It was a few days earlier than the February 27 date predicted by Astrology Zone to be "the luckiest day of the year" for an Aries like Demong, but consider that a rounding error: after winning the gold, he proposed to his girlfriend Katie Koczynski-smart move; there's no way she could say no!-and then learned he'd been selected as the American flag bearer in Sunday's closing ceremonies! Always trust content from Susan Miller.

The proposal story of Billy Demong and Katie Koczynski (herself a member of the US skeleton team) is even more happy-making than that: he apparently brought the ring with him to the race in his gear bag (it was "wearing a hole," he later quipped) and surprised not just Katie but a huge crowd of happy pals when he popped the question:

The U.S. Ski Team House in Whistler, BC was packed tonight as friends and family gathered to celebrate Billy Demong's Nordic Combined gold medal and U.S. Teammate Johnny Spillane's silver.
When Demong took the mic many expected him to thank his loved ones for their support in helping make his Olympic dreams come true. Demong's gold is the first ever Nordic Olympic gold medal won for the USA.
Instead, Demong called his girlfriend Katie to the stage, and as he got down on one knee, onlookers screamed. The cheering was so loud in fact that Demong's proposal was barely audible.

    &hl;&fs;&fmt;
(dabbing tears with hanky) Anyway, I'm highlighting this because I wish the Times had devoted more space to this story. Maybe it's just my inner Olympics geek speaking but I thought they were by far the most interesting couple this weekend. Everyone else made me yawn a lot. We had some youngs, some olds, some subway encounters, a few overeducated strivers.
The featured Vows column, which focused on Perla Farias and David Portugal, Jr., was the only other story of note, touching as it did on the issue of immigration reform by way of explaining that "nearly two dozen relatives aunts, uncles, and cousins of Ms. Farias, all originally from Mexico and all undocumented were missing from their June 19 wedding" due to fears of being stopped and deported.

It's always a little weird when some Hot Button Issues get all mixed up in my Weddings and Celebrations I'm trying to , and so I'll skip over the politicizing and get to the important meat of the story:

Shortly before Christmas 2007, Mr. Portugal presented her with a poster-size portrait of her that he'd painted, using a photo from her MySpace page showing her in a T-shirt that said, "Think: It isn't illegal yet."
"I remember being really impressed, but being weirded out at the same time," she said of her friend, who seemed at the cusp of becoming something more.

I actually loved that, because it was so honest sometimes you read these Vows things, and in the same situation the girl would be like "I looked at the painting and immediately recognized the Warholian influences, which grabbed my attention because, as you know, Edie Sedgwick used to babysit me in Santa Barbara, and later sold me drugs. Anyway, what a coincidence, right? That's how I knew he was the one for me."
Meanwhile, today's girl is all: "for serious?"
He was for serious. After they started dating, Portugal wanted to ask her father for her hand in marriage and had his roommates teach him enough Spanish so that he could ultimately "stumble through it, in front of three generations of the Farias family." Aw.

Farias and Portugal are babies 21 and 22, respectively and are one of several young pairs featured this weekend. Rebecca Reisner and Zachary Manchester met at Cornell, "from which both graduated and where the bridegroom also received a master's in aerospace engineering." (He is currently working on his doctorate in same.)

Ivy League-branded love also blossomed between Jennie Eskin and Kristofer Ekdahl, who are 25 and both graduated with honors from Princeton. I don't know if I'd want to get married so young. Your friends would all be poor and give you shitty wedding gifts, you know!? Then again, they'd probably actually enjoy your nuptials because it wouldn't be their sixth time in as many weeks dancing to "We Are Family" in a hotel...

    Get wealthier by sleeping more?

  • Sep 22, 2010 from jmorrow10(Jarret Morrow)
jmorrow10 To his teachers, 16-year-old Billy, is the student most likely to fall asleep in class. After all, his school day is followed by a grueling basketball practice then three hours behind a fast food counter. Following that, theres homework, late night phone chats with his girlfriend, and catching up on MTV. When Billys head finally hits the pillow, his mind is still racing with thoughts about everything from tomorrows history test to the latest outbreak of zits. Then, just when it seems like hes finally settled into a cozy sleep, his alarm clock rings, and its time to do it all over again. Sound vaguely familiar?
Billys case is not unusual. Almost all of us can relate to the busy, no time for sleep schedule that has become the norm in society, but few of us realize that healthy sleep is one of the key ingredients to a happy, healthy life. Websters Dictionary defines sleep as:
that well known state in which there is a suspension in the voluntary exercise of the powers of the body and mind, and which is periodically necessary to bodily health.
Sleep is necessary to bodily health, even ol Webster knows that. Everyone knows that, its nothing new. But sleep still seems to be taken for granted. Everyone sleeps. But hardly anyone knows the importance of sleep, the functions of sleep, and the effects that not enough sleep has on a person.
The importance of sleep should be obvious; you dont sleep, you dont live. Everyone knows that sleep is crucial to existence. The keyword is existence. The average American goes through life existing. But an adult that actually gets enough sleep will not just exist, but also thrive.
What happens when you dont get enough sleep?
On average, adults require between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. For those whore over the age of 60, six hours is adequate, since we actually require less sleep as we age. Not getting enough zzzz may lead to a multitude of things. Reduced energy levels, irritability, disorientation, dark circles under the eyes, and fatigue are just a few. The bodys immune system also suffers from a lack of sleep. A person with inadequate sleep is more likely to catch colds, and the flu. But thats not all, an estimated 200,000 auto accidents a year are caused by sleepy drivers.
If falling asleep at the wheel or being just plain drowsy and possibly killing you and someone else isnt enough, then there is an advantage to getting enough shuteye financially too. Sleep deprivation costs Americans more than $100 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, sick leave, and property and environmental damage. Which means the person that takes time to sleep is better off financially. The importance of sleep is clearly shown. Not enough sleep equals grumpy, sick, dead or injured, and financially disabled people.
Furthermore, the functions of sleep are also something that is overlooked by the general population. Contrary to popular opinion, the function of sleep is not to prevent sleepiness any more than the function of eating is to prevent hunger. The functions of sleep, in spite of a century of scientific study, remains a biological mystery. Scientists do have theories to the functions of sleep however.
Theories about why we need sleep?
The first theory involves the importance of Restoration and Recovery. This hypothesis is that sleep serves to reverse and/or restore biochemical and physiological processes that are progressively degraded during prior wakefulness. This theory is the most popular or the most widely accepted. There are elements that dont go parallel with this theory though. One is physically fit individuals do not have longer sleep durations than the unfit. According to this theory, however, someone who exercised regularly would need more Restoration and Recovery sleep than someone who didnt exercise, which isnt true.
Editors note: I disagree with Sam about his suggestion that athletes or those who exercise regularly not need more sleep. Research often suggests that more sleep can improve athletic performance.
The second theory is Energy Conservation. According to this theory, sleep serves to reduce metabolic or fat burning rates while asleep. Or in other words, sleep conserves energy fat- which makes individuals able to perform their daily tasks. Although scientist arent completely sure which theory is correct, they do know that functions such as brain growth, consolidation of memory, removal of non relevant memories, and discharges of emotions, do occur while asleep. Although the scientific functions of sleep are not apparent, the physical ones are, without sleep one cannot survive.
Also, the effects on a person without enough sleep can be astronomical. Lost sleep adds up. Experts say loss of sleep is cumulative, creating a sleep debt. One hour of sleep loss every night for a week is the equivalent of staying up for an all-nighter. That all-nighter of lost sleep can cause a serious auto accident. In fact, over 200,000 sleep deprived related accidents occur a...
