If Youve Got Social Media Fatigue, UR DOIN IT WRONG

  • Aug 30, 2010 from techcrunch(TechCrunch)
techcrunch Just as I was reading Paul Carrs latest column about quitting social media, my husband looked at his phone and broke into a huge smile. He is a graphic designer and has long been a fan of Chank Fonts. Earlier that day, hed taken a picture of a retro-looking podiatrist office, posting it on Twitter with the word Font-o-licious. It didnt go viral. It didnt become a trending topic. It didnt get him 1,000 new followers or even attract much attention at all. But it was noticed by Chank Diesel of Chank Fonts who Tweeted Im gonna dedicate my next font to that type-savvy podiatrist and started following my husband.
Here in front of me was one of those serendipitous moments of social media collapsing space-and-time. These moments dont change the world, but theyre exactly what made social media so addictive in the first place. Imagine an industry hero of yours who seemed untouchable creating a product just because of a random picture you posted on an ever-moving stream of colliding information that he happened to see. Here, in the guise of my beaming husband, was the perfect articulation for why I think peopleeven my close friends who declare dramatic social media bankruptcy were just doing it wrong.
What made social media a phenomenon were moments like these. Passively connecting in-and-out of a persistent conversation with people you know and see everyday, people you know but have lost touch with, and people you dont know but share interests with. People who in a more efficient world, you might have known. Its about making relationships more efficient. My parents know what Ive been up to by reading my Twitter feed, so when I call home I dont have to answer a vague question like What have you been up to? I answer a specific question like What country are you traveling to now? If a friend is looking for a job at a given company, I cant always remember who I know who works there, but with LinkedIn, I dont have to. And seeing what an old flame looks like on Facebook never gets old.
If these selling points sound horribly clich its because they are commonplace reasons most everyday people use these sites, and indeed, the same reasons why the founders of most social media companies started these sites. But the sites worked too well at amassing fans, friends and followers, creating micro-economies where people sought to cash in on their would-be fame and influence. And that is when the problemsand inevitably the fatigue started. People competed for how many friends and followers they could rack up and how many RTs they could get in a day, seeing it as evidence of how cool or smart or influential they were. Thats when social media got mercenary and soulless.
Heres a clue: If you find yourself saying (Fill-in-the-blank-social-media-site) used to be soooooo much better before everyone was on it you are using the site wrong. You are following too many people, you are using it too much, you are strangling the pretty, little bunny. The beauty of these sites is you control how many friends you see, and how many of them see you. So if you used to love it and now hate it, well, you know what they say about when you point a finger. Three are pointing back at you.
Sometimes metrics can be a bad thing and beware of any so-called social media consultant who tells you otherwise. Whats the value of a Retweet or a Like? Its roughly the equivalent to sitting next to someone during a keynote who nods his head at a salient point. Someone hitting a button in front of them is hardly a heady endorsementnowhere near the impact of someone calling you to tell you about a story he read. That actually takes more than one-second of attention and work.
Everyone touts stats showing that recommendations are the most trusted form of advertising. Thats because in the old world recommendations were inefficient. I had to be so moved by, say, the service at a restaurant, that I proactively called people to tell them about it, or it stuck in the front of my mind solidly enough that when someone asked Where should we go to dinner? it came flying out. The power of personal recommendation doesnt carry over in a world where its as easy as clicking a button because the caliber of that recommendation is necessarily lowered by taking out barriers.
Of course not everyone becoming fatigued with social media whored themselves out to anyone who would follow or friend them, bartering likes and retweeting anyone who said something nice about them. Indeed, Mr. Carr locked his account and only followed a core group of friends. His biggest complaint was simply that he used it too muchupdating any thought in his head so that he didnt take time to mull and form that idea or joke until it was perfect, and that he was distracted. This is where the flood of apps may be making the problem worse, not better. After some early security glitches when Twitter desktop apps published direct messages, I decided to only use Twitter.com and update by text message to interact with the...

Seven Important Social Media Trends For The Next Year

  • Sep 12, 2010 from hgreenwood(Heinz Grünwald) in Technology
hgreenwood Social media changes from month to month. Trends come and go quicker than the seasons change. The latest trendy site could be next years Myspace and the hottest new site probably hasnt even been conceived yet or is at the couple of guys in a garage stage. Having said that there are some trends that I think will continue over the coming year and with that in mind I wanted to share them here. Rather than focusing in on the finer detail I have compiled the list below in broader terms with all the main players represented. All in all it should be an exiting year ahead in social media and these should be seven of the main trends
    Group Buying
This really has been the huge power house of online commerce in the last year. Services like Groupon have come on the scene in a big way (Even Microsoft entered the market today) and the idea behind it really is so simple that it makes you think Why didnt I think of that. Like all kick ass ideas this one is incredibly simple and instantly understandable and there is something in it for everybody. The idea is nothing new but giving it legs through things like apps and the ability to share deals with friends makes the whole sector spread faster. Expect this to continue in a big way over the next couple of years with copy cat services and the big players rolling in to more territories and rolling out better and more extensive deals.
    Question And Answer Sites
These sites are hardly new and have been around for years but a new range of social features and bigger audiences have seen existing sites and some innovative start ups make this an interesting space once again. The big boys like Facebook are rolling this out as we speak to their huge user base and will be making it front and center on profiles as they look to tap in to the collective knowledge of the site. Another innovative start up that is making some serious noise within the tech community is Quora which should break out in to the main stream this coming year. Collective knowledge is incredibly powerful and social media is making that knowledge easier to spread.
    Mobile
I was going to call this section location but I really do think the opportunities in this sector extend far beyond people checking in to bars for free coffee. There is no doubt that services like Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook places will continue to grow and be adopted by a larger audience but I dont even think the most exciting technologies have even been invented in this space yet. The best is yet to come. The really exciting thing to consider is what can be achieved with mobile advertising and with all the big players including Google and Apple trying to crack this market the real innovation has yet to come. People all over the world are walking around with mini computers in their hands and you can basically let your imagination run wild with the endless possibilities that offers to the social media industry.
    Facebook Credits
Facebook have been dipping their toes in to the credits system of micro payments over the last 6 months by giving users free credits to help them get used to the system as well as doing a massive deal with Zynga to add the credits to their games. I strongly believe Facebook credits will become one of the defining moments in Facebooks history and be the cash cow that drives them forward towards IPO. With Facebook taking a cut of the credits and brands and businesses scrambling to use them there really will only be one winner in all of this. Expect Facebook credits to be ubiquitous across the web within 2 years as people use the trusted platform to by all sorts of things.
    Branded Content
Brands and businesses are starting to realize that one of the main ways of engaging their customers and offering value is to create content that enriches the users social media experience rather than just blasting messages out at them. With users starting to get more and more aware of ads and adding their own filters the smart brands will create bespoke content that engages users in a meaningful way and offers value. Building that content in to Facebook and other social sites while all hooking back to their own website will be crucial with video playing a more and more important role in the branded content play.
    Twitter Monetizing
They sure are taking their time on this one but they are very much at the stage Facebook were 18 months ago when they just went on a land grab of users and made sure their service was as stable as possible. Twitter have started rolling out some monetization features like promoted tweets but they havent really come in with the hard sell just yet. Id expect Twitter to keep focusing on growth for the best part of the next year before switching on the revenue in a major way just like Facebook are at the moment.
    Google To Keep On Failing
I dont care how many people Google hire or companies they buy they are always going to struggle in the social media space. They dont have it in their DNA as a company to be social as far as...

A New Version Of Google Chrome Now Due Every Six Weeks

  • Jul 22, 2010 from techcrunch(TechCrunch)
techcrunch With their Chrome web browser, Google has always been obsessed with speed. And now theyre speeding up another aspect of it: how often stable builds are released. The goal now is to release a new stable version of the browser every six weeks about twice as fast as they currently do, Google says.In other words, get ready for Chrome 6, 7, 8, and 9 coming soon.
So why is Google doing this? Because theyre creating new features so quickly and they want to make sure all users get them as fast as possible. These quick iterations also will allow Google to have more firmly set schedules for Chrome. And as a result, project managers will be able to set realistic goals for amount of work that can be done by a certain time.
But the most important thing that Google highlights may be the easing of pressure off of their engineering team. Under the old, longer release model, engineers would be pressured into trying to finish new features before a deadline or risk having them cut and not showing up for months. With the new release schedule, even if something isnt ready to go in one release, it will only be six weeks until it makes the next one.
Google is also trying to downplay the rapid iteration of versions that will be coming:
Since we are going to continue to increment our major versions with every new release (i.e. 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0) those numbers will start to move a little faster than before. Please dont read too much into the pace of version number changes they just mean we are moving through release cycles and we are geared up to get fresher releases into your hands!
Google does not that this six week cycle is running under ideal conditions, so its possible it may slip from time to time. Still, its pretty exciting how fast theyll be iterating now. And even if the version numbers dont mean much, the other browsers are going to have to make sure their users know that, or it may look like Chrome is running laps around them.

Im Giving Cable 6 Months, Then Im Cutting Off Its Head

  • Sep 18, 2010 from techcrunch(TechCrunch)
techcrunch Among companies I loathe, Comcast is right up there. Alongside Expedia and AT&T, they share the common thread of having typically poor service, and even worse customer service. But Im a forgiving guy. Im willing to give Comcast a second chance. Well, for 6 months at least.
Ive been a Comcast customer a few different times at various points of my life. Each time Ive had an awful experience. My favorite was two years ago when I was continually getting billed for services I didnt have (nor had I ever had, actually). Each month I was told it was resolved, and each month it was right back on my bill. It took me bitching up a storm on Twitter to get it actually resolved by the higher-ups at the company. And I know my situation wasnt unique and sadly, many people have an even bigger nightmare resolving things.
After that incident, I cancelled my cable television service from Comcast. Unfortunately, I couldnt completely sever the tie, because they were the only high-speed Internet provider in my area. Still, it was kind of wonderful, I used a combination of iTunes, Hulu, and Xbox Live to get all my content over Comcasts dumb pipe. But something was still missing.
When I moved last year, I was in an area where Comcast didnt reign supreme, so I decided to get cable television again. I just wanted to see if I really had missed it. It turns out I sort of had mainly because of sports. So now I have a difficult choice. Ive just moved again and sadly, once again, only Comcast is available in my area. I have to get Internet from them, so Ive decided to sign up for one of their special packages that is discounted for 6 months.
I dont particularly want to do this, but its also football season, and I really dont feel like having to go to a bar every time I want to see a game. More importantly, the new Apple TV and Google TV are on the verge of launching. And there are even more potentially interesting things on the horizon. I think were getting closer and closer to the point where completely cutting the cord is not just viable, but a savvy move.
And while some of my counterparts like Nick Bilton have been able to cut the cord already, others, like Dan Frommer, reattached it. Were not there just yet.
As everyone is well aware, Apple TV hasnt been a success up until now. I like mine, but the content model on it is flawed. The move to TV show rentals is definitely a welcome one. But with only content from ABC and some content from Fox, the selection isnt good enough. My hope is that this model proves to be a success and the other networks/stations get on board quickly. (Though it doesnt look too promising right now.)
More interesting about the new Apple TV is the AirPlay functionality that is going to allow you to push almost any video content from any iOS device right to your Apple TV (and soon other devices that have this built-in). Yes, that includes Netflix and the MLB app.
Sports remain an issue in general, but some are supposedly coming to Xbox Live compliments of ESPN shortly. And there is ESPN 3, the online component of the network that allows you to watch games live online if your provider has a deal with them to carry it (Comcast does).
Meanwhile, Google TV is set to launch as soon as next month. Its a little bit different because it seems to be a layer that will exist on top of current television offerings. But it will also be pushing online video as well. That could definitely help change the stigma that is still associated with online video versus television.
And then theres that new Mac mini with an HDMI output.
All of this stuff is chipping away at the cable television stronghold. There isnt going to be one killer, but all of these combined are slowly doing the job. And theyll continue to get better at it.
I fully understand that the vast majority of people are not going to cut the cable anytime soon. This smorgasbord of services is way too complicated for the average consumers to deal with. But I think its foolish if these companies believe that people never will (especially if cable keeps offering a user experience that is utter garbage).
Eventually, everything, including all video content, is going to be served over one pipe the Internet. And, as is always the case, young people are going to lead this revolution. The excuse that, my parents are never going to cancel their cable isnt a valid one. This is about the future.
So, Im giving Comcast 6 months to live, then Im likely cutting off its head and going Internet-only. The timing seems right.
Humorously, Comcast isnt making this particularly easy. I was on the web yesterday looking at my options, and I found one I think I liked. But I couldnt find a way to add all the options I wanted (like a DVR), so I called customer support. After about six steps where I basically had to prove I wasnt already a customer (I mean, seriously?), I got through to an actual human being.
Naturally, he tried to get me to sign up for a significantly more expensive package (more...

About this book
With such groundbreaking bestsellers as Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause, Dr. Christiane Northrup is one of today’s most trusted and visionary medical experts. Now she presents her most profound and revolutionary approach to women’s health. . . . The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for our state of health and well-being for our entire lives. Because our mothers are our first and most powerful female role models, our most deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves as women come from them. And our behavior in relationships—with food, with our children, with our mates, and with ourselves—is a reflection of those beliefs. Once we understand our mother-daughter bonds, we can rebuild our own health, whatever our age, and create a lasting positive legacy for the next generation. Mother-Daughter Wisdom introduces an entirely new map of female development, exploring the “five facets of feminine power,” which range from the basics of physical self-care to the discovery of passion and purpose in life. This blueprint allows any woman—whether or not she has children—–to repair the gaps in her own upbringing and create a better adult relationship with her mother. If she has her own daughter, it will help her be the mother she has always wanted to be. Drawing on patient case histories and personal experiences, Dr. Northrup also presents findings at the cutting edge of medicine and psychology. Discover:•How to lay the nutritional foundation to prevent eating disorders and adult diseases•The truth about the immunization controversy–and the true meaning of immunity•How we can change our genetic health legacy•Why financial literacy is essential to women’s health•How to foster healthy sexuality and future “love maps” in our daughters •How to balance independence with caring, and individual growth with family ties Written with warmth, enthusiasm, and rare intelligence, Mother-Daughter Wisdom is an indispensable book destined to change lives and become essential reading for all women. From the Hardcover edition.
