Is a nose-piercing enough to get suspended from school?
The School Should Stick Its Piercing Rules in a Hole.
by Jessica Samakow
Youre entitled to believe anything you want, as long as we agree with your beliefs.
These might as well have been the words spoken to 14-year-old Ariana Iacono by school officials last week when they decided to suspend her for refusing to remove her nose piercing.
North Carolinas Clayton High School insists Arianas tiny stud is a violation of the schools dress code. The pierced freshman claims her nose stud is an expression of her religion, the Church of Body Modification, which may be unfamiliar to most, but is, in fact, a federally-recognized organization.
We believe that the mind body soul are all one entity and that by modifying the body, you can bring the mind and soul into harmony, Minister Richard Ivey tells North Carolinas ABC11, explaining the basis of his religion.
Although Clayton High Schools dress policy can be adjusted upon request of a student who holds a sincere religious belief, Arianas request was denied because school officials deemed her piercing unnecessary, even after they researched her religion.
In defense of her decision to keep the piercing in, Ariana tells a reporter that the stud acts as a healing aide following childhood abuse.
I was abused for years when I was younger, and I have really low self esteem, and it kind of helps me look at myself in a better way, she explains.
But frankly, giving a reason for her piercing should not even be a part of the equation. Whether or not the school understands her reasoning or sympathizes with her pain is completely irrelevant. The fact is, the piercing is a representation of her religion, and that alone should be the end of the discussion.
To be fair, there are some dress codes that make sense. When I was in high school, teachers would stop girls in the hall to assess whether their skirts reached the ends of their fingertips. If they fell short of the requirement, the girls were asked to change into their baggy gym uniform. Although a longer hem was not in style back then, that particular part of the dress code kept hormonal teens from being distracted by excess skin.
In Arianas case, however, its hard to believe anyone was offended by the microscopic stud in her nose. I cant think of a way it could cause any kind of distraction. If a student were to claim his religion required nipple exposure at all times, I could understand the school having an issue. But a nose piercing? Not a big deal at all. Actually, not even noticeable.
And, really, what is the difference between ear piercings and nose piercings, anyway? Why are studs in the ears acceptable, while a stud in the nose is considered inappropriate? They are mere inches away from each other. I understand that a line must be drawn somewhere, but in comparing the two piercing locations, I find no difference.
It is completely ridiculous that the school is so against a nose piercing that they are willing to compromise a students education and religious freedom. What about real problems that are far bigger than a one centimeter nose stud? Hows the drug and alcohol problem in your neck of the woods?
Stop being holier than thou, Clayton High School.

So, whats wrong with a North Carolina school system that suspends a 14-year-old with a nose stud?
Absolutely nothing!
Last week, Clayton High School enforced its dress-code policy, which says no jewelry in the nose, tongue, lips, cheeks and eyebrows. And well they should.
While students would argue that this is a case of the freedoms of speech and religion entering school grounds, I would say thats not the case at all. If we extend that logic, then why not add in the right to bear arms for the teen set? All those no-weapons policies would go out the window. And if we allowed 14-year-olds the right to vote, wed have Lady Gaga in the White House. (Yes, I know shes not yet 35, but the little monsters would probably repeal that rule as well.)
Schools establish policies to provide a minimally distracting learning environment for students. As a parent, I havent always agreed with the policies, including one schools no nail-polish mandate. But each year, I dutifully read through the school handbook, sign on the dotted line and abide by the rules and regulations.
For the most part, my kids do, too. If they wear too many Silly Bandz or show too much skin, which are also against school policy, I expect them to be reprimanded.
To me, its like being invited to friends homes. You might not agree when they dont allow your children to eat on the couch or put their shoes all over the La-Z-Boy, but, hey, its their rules. Youre in their house and you mind your manners.
Likewise, North Carolina high-school freshman Ariana Iacono is not respecting the rules of her school.
Ariana says that the piercing is part of her religion. Her church, the Church of Body...

Acupuncture is enjoying a wider audience as more and more of us become willing to do anything to lose weight. While thousands of people have gotten their ears stapled in hopes of becoming thin, the reality is that any proof of this treatment is biased or inconclusive, and any results are usually accompanied by the two weight loss essentials, diet and exercise.
Depending on the source, acupuncture works wonders, or its just snake oil. For example, in 2003 The Journal of Medical Acupuncture announced a study that showed acupuncture treatments increased weight loss results three times for participants over a control group that received no acupuncture. But if you tell that to your doctor, theres a 95% chance youll get a bored, blank look and be told, would you please just go get one hour of exercise a day and cut out the fatty foods?
The most common acupuncture weight loss treatment is ear stapling, which is supposed to stimulate the Zero Point location and thus improve your metabolism and reduce your appetite. The procedure is a lot like getting your ears pierced, but in this case a thin wire of surgical grade steel is stapled in a C shape at the top of the hole into your ear drum, curling up about half an inch to wrap around the first fold of cartilage. You keep the staple on for three to six months. Ear stapling costs from $30 to $75 for each ear.
However, ear stapling is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what a certified acupuncturist will do for you. And, to be fair, you really have to go find a good certified acupuncturist if you expect anything beyond a cool gimmick for your weight loss hopes. Acupuncture has been used for nearly 2500 years, so this is clearly no fad, but you must find someone who actually knows what they are doing. And when you do find them, they will probably just smile at you when you mention ear stapling.
Traditionally acupuncturists use much more comprehensive methods than just ear stapling, and they work to improve the flow of Qi, or life energy, through your spleen and liver systems. A good acupuncturist will see any weight problems as symptoms of larger issues, and if you do see results with your weight loss it will probably be the result of the acupuncturist making some headway with the underlying issues. A treatment like this will take more than one visit you will probably need to see your acupuncturist for six weeks or more, one or two times a week.
All that said, if you are interested in boosting an existing weight loss program either by getting your ear stapled, or by finding a professional, certified acupuncturist, it certainly wont hurt you. Many people go simply because acupuncture helps motivate them to take the more difficult actions that do create weight loss, like getting more exercise and permanently changing how they eat. It is worth a try if you want to support your other weight loss efforts. You may improve your overall health, too.

Looking out for its own self-interest, IBM rolled out the red carpet for its favorite Silicon Valley startups today at its IBM SmartCamp event in Palo Alto, Calif.
On Wednesday, the startups were treated to an all-day session with IBM executives and other experts who trained them how to speak in public. Then on Thursday, five startup CEOs got in front of a crowd of venture capitalists at the Quadrus Capital Center, where they gave their pitches in a contest for prizes.
It was interesting to watch this event to see how IBM gives entrepreneurs Big Blue bear hugs at a time of economic uncertainty. It was the sixth such event since November, 2009, and the winners of this event will move on to finals in Dublin, Ireland, in November. IBM got lots of the VCs to show up because its an investor in their funds. That may sound like a strong-arm tactic, but its all based mutual self-interest.
The five competitors were CitySourced, which provides an iPhone app that allows you to report pot holes and other problems to your city maintenance staff and receive notification when the problem has been fixed; iFind Systems, which tracks livestock in real time through low-power ear tags; Streetline Networks, which monitors parking spots in real time so that meter enforcers can put tickets on car windows efficiently; Aquacue, which turns a standard water meter into a smart meter that can detect leaks, conserve water and reduce bills; and CareCloud, a web-based service company that modernizes workflow in a doctors office.
IBM executives Claudia Fan Munce, Gerald Mooney, and Deborah Magid spoke at the event about how Big Blue tries to foster relationships with startups, even if it isnt investing directly in them. They said it is good business to create relationships with companies in their early stages so that they can eventually start business relationships as those companies become more mature.
Mooney, head of the IBM public sector business, said startups should pay attention to specific trends if they want to get on IBMs radar. Big Blue has systematically shifted its focus to growth markets in developing countries. It has also focused on cloud computing to expand capabilities and reduce costs. Going green is another big topic at IBM under a program known as Smarter Planet. And it is helping businesses become hip to the demands of on demand computing, or providing computing services in real time, instrumenting and analyzing businesses, and connecting people more efficiently. In each of these areas, IBM is looking for both partners and customers.
Magid, who is a director in the IBM venture capital group, said the entrants were all variations on the theme of a Smarter Planet, or using technology to make the world a better place. Venture capitalist Ann Winblad, managing director of Hummer Winblad, told the startups that intellectual capital trumps venture capital anytime, and that networking in groups like the IBM SmartCamp will pay off for startups in the long run. Interestingly, she said that startups shouldnt worry so much about big, known competitors such as Microsoft and whether they will move into the startups realm. Those companies have transparent marketing roadmaps that they have to disclose to their customers, so their intentions are often clear. Less obvious are what other startups will do, she said. Thats also why partnerships with large companies can work for small startups.
The joint winners of IBMs startup contest were Streetline Networks and CareCloud. Streetline is relatively well known as the company that puts smart dust sensors in the ground near parking meters in California cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sausalito and Culver City. Those meters detect whether a car is present and if the meter is fed. If it isnt parking authorities can send a meter enforcer to the spot and issue a ticket. San Francisco has 9,000 sensors. When a parking meter is full of coins, Streetline can dispatch someone to empty it.
Zia Yusuf (pictured, left), chief executive of Streetline Networks, said that research shows that 30 percent to 35 percent of traffic is due to people driving around looking for parking. Thats why Streetline will use its data, which for now fills the coffers of city governments, to give information to consumers. The company is working on iPhone and other mobile apps that can tell you where the open parking spots are near you. It will, for instance, give you turn-by-turn voice instructions to show you the nearest available spot. Eventually, other applications will sit on top of Streetlines platform.
Our goal is to make guided parking as prevalent as a traffic light, Yusuf said.
The co-winner of the SmartCamp competition was CareCloud, headed by chief executive Albert Santalo (pictured, middle right). The company is bringing medical offices into the modern age by converting them to cloud computing, where much of the processing, applications, and storage for computing tasks take place in web-connected data...
