The Demographics Of Occupy Wall Street | Fast Company

  • Oct 20, 2011 from mikeymicron(Mikeymicron)
mikeymicron Students are a big contingent at Zucotti Park and other occupations. But a new study shows that online support crosses age, income and political boundaries. Look out for the rich, nonpartisan mobs. Coverage of the technology at Occupy Wall Street focuses on the neat-o, young-people elements such as Twitter, Facebook, live streaming video, and a sleepover atmosphere . But Occupy Wall Street also employs the kind of heavy-duty data crunching and analysis found at marketing firms and universities. In fact, two of the volunteers, business analyst Harrison Schultz and professor Hector R. Cordero-Guzman from the Baruch College School of Public Affairs, today released a study based on a survey of 1,619 visitors to the occupywallst.org site on October 5. And about a quarter of them have also attended occupation events. So they aren't all armchair activists.

Some of the results are to be expected. For example about 64% of respondents are younger than 34. But others back up the assertion made in the title of the report “Main Stream Support for a Mainstream Movement: The 99% Movement Comes From and Looks Like the 99%.” Among the findings: They aren’t all kids . Xers, Boomers, and older are also in on it: One-third of respondents is older than 35, and one-fifth is 45 or older.

It’s not all students and the educated elite . About 8% have, at best, a high school degree. And just about a quarter (26.7%) are enrolled in school. Only about 10% are full-time students. “Get a job!” wouldn’t apply to most of them . Half of the respondents are already employed full-time, and an additional 20% work part-time. Just 13.1% are unemployed--not a whole lot more than the national average.

“Tax the rich!” could hit close to home . About 15% earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually (pretty good anywhere except in Manhattan). Thirteen percent earn over $75,000 annually, and nearly 2% bring in more than $150,000.

It may be a party, but not that kind . The movement is often identified as a liberal, even Democrat-dominated cause. But just 27.3% of respondents call themselves Democrats (and 2.4% are Republican). And the rest, 70% call themselves independents.

Not everyone tweets . The microblogging site played a big role in getting the movement started. But that’s not how most people keep up with it. Twenty-nine percent of respondents are regular Twitter users. But 66% are Facebook regulars. The biggest online community, however, is YouTube, with about 74% being regular users.

While interesting, the survey is still a rough cut, with some gaps. For example, it’s based largely on what men said, as they make up about two-thirds of the survey takers. But the genders may not be so far apart. In an email Harrison Schultz tells Fast Company, “Response patterns for female respondents were so nearly identical to the male respondents that I won't bother to indicate them.” The one difference: 52% of the women listen to the radio, vs. 40% the men. So Schultz is looking at this to fine-tune OWS’s target marketing. (Yes, they are doing target marketing.)

And so far, according to the survey, Occupy Wall Street would qualify as stuff white people like. The sample of non-white people, according to Schultz, is too small to even analyze. One thing he noticed, however, is that some people identify with nationality, rather than race--another item to keep in mind for target marketing. And in the vein, the organizers have been discussing doing a “non-white media day,” in which everyone who speaks to the media is of another ethnic background. They have also discussed doing an over-40 day.

On a personal note, I have noticed plenty of both at the park and the marches.

Viva Mexico! A Look at Mexicos Best Fighters

  • Sep 15, 2010 from ssquared22(Shawn M. Smith ) in *
ssquared22 As Mexicans get ready for their bicentennial celebration, its once again time to take a look at whos who among The Aztec Nations best boxers. So, to kick off Mexican Independence Day properly, heres a look at Mexicos Top 10 fighters:
    1) Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs): Despite a tough loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr during his brief stint at welterweight last September, Marquez sits atop a very impressive list of Mexican fighters and reigns supreme in the lightweight division. Even at 37 years of age and despite showing some signs of slowing down during his July win over Juan Diaz, Dinamita is still one of boxings best technical fighters and one of its toughest combatants. Next up for Marquez is an explosive showdown with Aussie warrior, Michael Katsidis in November.
    2) Fernando Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KOs): Cochulito had a bad 2009, finishing the year with a technical draw to Alejandro Valdez and a deep gash over his left eye. 2010 definitely brought a return to form for Montiel as he won the vacant WBO title against undefeated Ciso Morales via TKO 1 in February and then annexed the WBC version of the title two months later by going to Japan and knocking out the highly-regarded Hozumi Hasegawa in four rounds. Less than three months after that, Montiel would make his first defense of the unified title by stopping Panamas Rafael Concepcion in three. Plans to fight talented Filipino-American, Nonito Donaire, have apparently fallen apart, but Montiel plans on defending his titles one more time before the end of the year.
    3) Edgar Sosa (40-6, 24 KOs): Former junior flyweight champ, Sosa saw his title reign and physical well-being disappear at the end of 2009 thanks to a headbutt to the cheek and orbital bone by Rodel Mayol. After seven months of rehab, Sosa is back and looking sharper than ever. Once a 108 lb. champion with ten consecutive defenses, Sosa seems to be focusing now on the flyweight division, one weight class to the north of his old stomping grounds. Hes 3-0 with 3 KOs against solid opposition so far this year.
    4) Giovanni Segura (25-1-1, 21 KOs): Already an impressive world class fighter, this Aztec Warrior from the state of Guerrero, did the impossible by not only beating longtime junior flyweight kingpin, Ivan Calderon, but by stopping the defensive genius as well. Segura is a buzzsaw of aggression and determination who cuts opponents down by sheer brute force. Hes also one of boxings pound-for-pound biggest punchers and his six straight stoppage wins prove that fact.
    5) Humberto Soto (52-7-2, 32 KOs): Often lost in the mix, La Zorrita remains one of boxings best technical fighters and a textbook example of the Mexican style of prize fighting. 2010 saw Soto firmly establish himself in the lightweight division by beating former champ, David Diaz, for the vacant WBC lightweight title in March. Questions remain whether Soto, a natural super featherweight, has the physical strength to sustain a long title run at 135, but, after a September 18th optional defense, Soto will entertain many of the title fight options sitting at his doorstep.
    6) Alfredo Angulo (19-1, 16 KOs): El Perro spent 2010 utterly demolishing a former title challenger, Joel Julio, and a former world champion, Joachime Alcine, in eleven and two rounds respectively. Still hurting psychologically from a mid-2009 decision loss to Kermit Cintron, Angulo has stopped his last four opponents within the distance and has looked brutally sharp in the process.
    7) Rafael Marquez (39-5, 35 KOs): Theres still debate as to how much his four-fight series with Israel Vazquez has taken from him, but in the fourth installment of Marquez-Vazquez, it was Rafael who looked young and fresh by stopping his rival in three bloody rounds. Perhaps the finest pure boxer on this list, Marquez deserves the benefit of the doubt in his career and will have a chance to show the world what he has left in his November bout with heavy-handed Puerto Rican star, Juan Manuel Lopez.
8.) Abner Mares (20-0-1, 13 KOs): There were a lot of doubts swirling around the 24-year old Mares. There were some health concerns and some buzz doubting his mental toughness, but Mares ended all negative talk by stepping up against Yonnhy Perez, and fighting the underrated, tough-as-nails Colombian world champ to a controversial draw. Many ringside observers, including this writer, felt that Mares deserved the nod. The native of Guadalajara, Jalisco steps up his game even further in December as he takes on Armenian wild man, Vic Darchinyan in the first round of a mini-bantamweight tournament.
    9) Ulises Solis (31-2-2, 21 KOs): Archie Solis could have taken his loss to Brian Viloria in April of 2009 the wrong way and allow it to fester in the back of his mind. Instead, this former junior flyweight champ went right back to work and has scored three straight dominant wins over solid opposition. Solis goal is to recapture gold, whether it be at 108 or 112 lbs.
    10) Saul Alvarez (33-0-1, 25 KOs): Last...

    Frank Mirs Greatest FightsSo Far

    CageDoctors Frank Mir
    September 22, 2010 Dr. T
Frank Mir is without a doubt one of the top heavyweights in the UFC today. A major reason why he is one of the top contenders in the UFC today is cause of the great fights he has been involved in. In anticipation of his September 25th bout against Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 119, here are a few fights that show exactly why he is one of the best in the UFC.
    UFC 107: Mir vs Kongo
Mir put on a great show against Kongo, partly fueled with getting a rematch against Lesnar and partly because he put on an extra 35 pounds of muscle.

    UFC 92: Mir vs Nogueira
Nogueira claims to have been in a weakened state due to recently getting over a Staph infection, however, Mir was still able to show some quick footwork and box Nogueira into the ground.
    Watch the fight here
    UFC 81: Mir vs Lesnar
Lesnar definitely got his redemption on this one, but before he did, Mir was the only one to beat him.

UFC 46: Mir vs Sims 2
Yet another exemplary showing on the part of Mir in slowly picking apart Sims until he could no longer stand.

    UFC 48: Mir vs Sylvia
This fight puts the statement do anything to win in the dictionary as Mir shows no shame in breaking Sylvias arm.
